"In response to the discovery and spread of WNS, VDGIF and partners initiated three projects to assist in our understanding of WNS and its impacts. Two of these efforts include banding cave bats during spring emergence, fall swarm and early hibernation with the objectives of monitoring demographic and biometric changes associated with WNS, determine changes in population levels, and monitor individuals over time to determine potential resistance. The third effort focused on banding gray bats at bachelor and maternity sites in late summer. The objectives of this effort include gathering and monitoring demographic and biometric changes as WNS progressed into the range of the gray bat, determine movements of gray bats in Virginia, and follow individuals over time to determine potential resistance to WNS.
